まず、当サイトを参考にさせていただき、Form I-765を作製しました。それに、J1（私）とJ2（妻）のビザ、パスポート、I-94の両面のコピー、労働の目的はJ-1の補助ではないというstatement、小切手（現在$180になっています）をUSCISのオフィスに郵送しました。12/26に発送したところ、12/28付けで受領した旨のnotificationが届きました。その後、1/12付けでapproveされたというeメール（登録しておける）が届き、1/17に発送されたEADカードが1/18に届きました。ここまで、約20日でした。

次に1/24にSSオフィスでSSNを申請、このときは申請書にパスポートとEADのみを要求されました。SSNの申請にはなんら困難は無く、申請書にパスポート（出生証明のかわり？）＋EADで、窓口では5分で終わりでした。ここで2週間以内に発行されるという証明書をもらい、しばらく待つと、1/27に発送されたSSNが1/28に届きました。

情報の通り、Form I-765のSSNのところに「Will apply」と書いたのがよかったのかもしれません。以下にこれまでに情報がなかったstatementの作文を参考になればとあげておきます。

Statement for necessity of my employment

I am a J-2 dependent of my husband who is working with the US Environmental Protection Agency as a post doctoral fellow at the National Exposure Research Laboratory in Research Triangle Park, NC. His program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) which pays him stipend of $**** per year. This salary is enough for us to live in this country, and I am under no obligation to seek employment while I remain in the US.

However, I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from a university in Japan, and I wish to maintain my skill and knowledge of chemistry and learn more in related areas if I can.

I would appreciate it if you would please give me the authorization for employment so I will be able to work in the field of chemistry and develop my knowledge and skills further. I feel that this would help me remain current in my field and it should help me obtain a better job when I return to Japan.
