Postdoctoral Training Immunology and Autoimmune Disease

A postdoc position is immediately available in the Vilen lab at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Our lab focuses on the mechanisms underlying immune dysfunction in autoimmune disease. We identified that in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), defects in lysosome acidification reduce degradation of IgG-immune complexes that enter myeloid cells by phagocytosis. This defect leads to multiple pathologies associated with murine SLE. Our recently funded NIH/DOD grants propose translational studies to assess whether lysosome dysfunction underlies human SLE, and studies to assess whether restoring lysosome function prevents onset or attenuates progression of disease in mice. Other goals seek to define the molecular and genetic events that drive lysosome dysfunction. Thus, projects are available to study murine or human aspects of lupus. Successful candidates require a background in immunology, experiences in murine models or human translational research and good English speaking and writing skills. A sound track-record of publishing, and strong internal motivation are essential. Experiences in flow cytometry/microscopy (multicolor, multiple cell types), animal models (injection, bleeding, organ processing) are preferred. Salary is based on years of quality experience. Time period is variable, but funding is in-place for 4 years.

UNC-Chapel Hill is situated between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the NC Beaches, close to Durham, Raleigh, and Research Triangle Park. It has an excellent, collaborative research environment.

私たちの研究室では、自己免疫疾患における免疫破綻機構の解明に焦点をあてて研究をおこなっています。私たちは、全身性エリテマトーデス(SLE)において、リソソーム酸化の異常により、ミエロイド系細胞に貪食されたIgG結合免疫複合体の分解が減少することを突き止めました。この異常によりSLEモデルマウスにおける様々な病態が引き起こされます。
私たちは最近NIH/DODより、ヒトのSLEにおけるリソソーム機能不全の有無や、リソソーム機能の補填によりモデルマウスにおけるSLEの発症や増悪が抑制できるかを調べることを目的としたトランスレーショナルグラントを獲得しました。その他、リソソーム機能不全を引き起こす分子生物学、遺伝学的メカニズムの解明も目的としています。そのため、このプロジェクトではマウスSLEとヒトSLEの双方が研究可能です。詳しい研究内容に関してはこちらのサイトをご覧ください：
