Postdoctoral Fellow in Chemical Food Safety

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University for a highly-motivated individual with strong interests in chemical food safety, environmental toxicology, and/or study of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs).

We use variety of species including fish and rodents to screen for and study the effect of toxic compounds in foods, beverages, and the environment and to understand molecular mechanisms underlying adverse effects of EDCs. Examples of current research interests of my lab are following:

1.Toxicity of emerging contaminants found in food including ‘obesogens’
2.Thyroid hormone disrupting compounds and their mechanism of toxicity
3.Complex mixtures of toxic compounds in food and water
4.Effect of EDCs at critical developmental life stages in humans and animals

Individuals interested in the above topics are encouraged to apply.

Previous experience in toxicology is preferred and extensive expertise in at least one of the following areas is required: 1) molecular biology techniques, 2) bioinformatics, 3) histological techniques, or 4) liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry methods. Experience working with zebrafish will be a plus.

The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory progress and funding availability.

Interested applicants should submit CV, a cover letter that contains research experience and interests together with names of three references to the PI:

University of Georgia Postdoctoral Fellow

Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Immunology and Vaccinology

Fikri Avci, PhD
Assistant Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC)
University of Georgia
315 Riverbend Rd.
Athens, GA 30602 United States

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Fikri Avci to study the molecular and cellular basis for activation of adaptive immune response by carbohydrate antigens. Successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn and apply immunological and biochemical tools to study key mechanisms by which carbohydrate antigens induce adaptive immune response. Based on the mechanisms discovered, we will design and develop knowledge-based, new-generation vaccines and test their protection in several disease models. Our research program is constructed around our recent discovery of the mechanism for glycoconjugate vaccine mediated adaptive immune response (Nature Medicine 17, 1602; Nature Protocols 7, 2180; Seminars in Immunology 25, 146).
Qualified applicants are expected to hold a recent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, or in related disciplines. Prior experience in working with mice and broad understanding of Immunology and/or Microbiology research are highly preferred. Competitive salary and benefits are available and will commensurate with experience.
University of Georgia offers a highly collaborative, top-notch training and research environment in biomedical sciences. CCRC is a world-renowned research center in Glycosciences. CMM was recently inaugurated to be a leader in biomedical research, with a goal to understand the molecular and cellular basis of human disease and use this information for the development of new therapies, cures and diagnostics.
Interested candidates should email their Curriculum vitae, a letter of interest outlining experience and research goals, and the names and contact information of three references to avcilab@gmail.com.
The University of Georgia is an EEO/AA institution.
