Investigation of mechanisms of innate control of adaptive immunity

A postdoctoral position is available at the Knapp Center for lupus and Immunology Research at the University of Chicago to dissect mechanisms that regulate tolerance and generation of autoantibodies in mouse models of autoimmune diseases. Our research areas include B cell and T cell tolerance, plasma cell differentiation, B cell receptor signaling, and differentiation of T follicular helper cell. Postdoc position open

We are seeking a recent Ph.D. fellow to perform two exciting projects. The first is to address how the conserved and universal CCA sequence at the tRNA 3’ end controls and regulates tRNA stability in cells. Although this CCA sequence is essential for the decoding process of tRNA, including amino acid charging and tRNA movement across the ribosome, our data suggests that it is also important to regulate tRNA stability in cells, suggesting the possibility of a previously unrecognized function of the sequence. The question of how tRNA stability and turnover is regulated inside cells, particularly during stress, is poorly understood but is directly relevant to human health. Cardiovascular disease that arises from delayed CCA addition may be caused by instability of tRNA due to the lack of CCA.

The second project is to develop and optimize prototype of oligonucleotide-based hybridization assays for the typing of single nucleotide polymorphisms and short tandem repeats from PCR amplified DNA fragments. This project will interface with other projects in the lab to miniaturize and automate sample processing from cell lysis to hybridization readout on a fabricated chip. This project has a strong potential for direct application to industry and to biotechnology.

For the first project, experience with molecular cloning and with gene knockout in the model organisms of E. coli (a model of Gram-) and B. subtilis (a model of Gram+) is important. It is also important to have experience with Northern analysis and tag-purification of proteins. This project will also involve developing a new fluorescent technique to monitor tRNA in cells. For the second project, experience with nucleic acid research and basic molecular cloning is important.

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our active new laboratory within the Infection and Immunity Program of the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences (SICS). The laboratory investigates mechanisms of the innate immune response, particularly NK cells, against oncogenic human viruses: EBV and HPV.

A research in World Class Institute (WCI) program at Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Korea.

The WCI program (Center for Kinomics-based Anticancer Research), with Prof. Raymond Leo Erickson (Director of Center) from Harvard University, consists of 16 scientists, eight Koreans and eight non Koreans. In addition eight foreign collaborators at Harvard Medical School and MIT, Maxplanck Institute and so on, have joined WCI for its global interdisciplinary research. Support is available from Dec. 1st, 2009 to Nov. 30th 2014. The aims of our WCI program are; finding anticancer targets and therapeutic drug candidates and identification of their functional roles in cancer. Any researchers who are interested in and have strong backgrounds in related fields are invited to apply. The foreign researchers would be given an apartment and monthly rental fee. A post-doctoral level researcher is needed at the Centre for Liver Research, University of Birmingham (UK), which has an international reputation in Basic and Translational Liver Science research. Since 2008 the Centre for Liver Research has been a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Unit (BRU). The Birmingham NIHR Liver BRU is part of a multi-million pound scheme to prevent, diagnose and treat ill-health, and is one of 16 BRUs in England that focus on translational research.

The Syn group focuses on dissecting mechanisms that promote progression of (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) fatty liver disease, and those that lead to the development of primary liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinoma). Currently, the group is examining the role of the novel matrix molecule and cytokine, Osteopontin in a) regulating lymphocyte recruitment across hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, b) driving liver repair and fibrosis, and c) enhancing tumor development. Underpinning all these are studies to investigate the post-transcriptional and post-translational regulation of the Osteopontin molecule. Approaches utilized include standard cell culture systems, molecular and cell biological techniques, and advanced immunological methods which include flow based adhesion assays and liver Krumdieck slices. In collaboration with groups in the USA, Germany and Spain, we will examine the role of Osteopontin isoforms (splice variants and PTM) in vivo.

The candidate should have a MD or PhD in molecular/ cellular biology/ immunology/ biochemistry or closely-related life/biomedical science field. The ideal candidate would be a motivated clinician and/or scientist with a strong background in the above and expertise in cell culture, protein biochemistry and signal transduction.

Macromolecular Electron Microscopy (EM) Postdoctoral Opportunity at The Scripps Research Institute

The Asturias laboratory is looking for a motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in expanding his research experience to the application of single-particle electron microscopy (EM) to characterize the structure and conformational dynamics of macromolecular assemblies involved in transcription and chromatin structure regulation.

Working with us would provide state-of-the-art training in macromolecular EM and an opportunity for in-depth examination of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the regulation of gene expression.
