Postdoc/graduate position in Germany: two-photon imaging in primates

Our laboratory located in the University of Tuebingen, Germany, has an opening for postdoc/graduate student positions to study the　structure and function of neural circuits underlying oculomotor decision-making in primates (marmosets and macaques) (see Sato et al., 2001, Neuron; Sato and Schall, 2003, Neuron). We will　accomplish this by exploiting cutting-edge techniques including two-photon imaging, optogenetics, and genetic manipulation by virus. These techniques will allow us to monitor and manipulate the activity of neurons with a specific identity. Whereas these techniques have been extensively used in rodents (e.g., Sato et al., 2007, PLoS Biol.; Sato and Svoboda, 2010, J Neurosci), their application to primates, the ultimate model system for human　cognition, has been quite limited. Through these projects, we will open a new line of research in the field of neuroscience.

Tuebingen is one of the major centers for primate research in Europe. The experiments will be conducted with extensive　interaction within the university as well as with the researchers at　Max Plank Institute located nearby.

ドイツ・チュービンゲン大学に所属する私たちの研究室では、霊長類の眼球運動系を用いて意思決定のメカニズムの研究を行ないます（Sato et al. 2001 Neuron; Sato and Schall 2003 Neuron）。近年、げっ歯類の脳において2光子イメージング・optogenetics・ウイルスを用いた遺伝子導入などの最先端技術（Sato et al. 2007 PLoS Biol.; Sato and Svoboda 2010 J Neurosci）により、１）局所神経回路を構成する全ての神経細胞を同時記録し、２）特定の種類の細胞の活動を操作することが可能になりました。我々はこれらの技術を、サル（ヒトの高次機能のモデル動物）に用いることで、意思決定の神経メカニズムを回路レベルで解明していきます。
