The Ecological Genetics Research Unit (EGRU), Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for

Doctoral Student Position

in the field of evolutionary genetics of sticklebacks. The assignment will begin on the early 2008 (start date is flexible) and end in the end of 2010. EGRU is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Evolutionary Genetics and Physiology (www.coe.fi).

The thesis will focus on identification of genes and genomic regions subject to directional selection stemming from local differences in specific environmental conditions. The planned work includes QTL-mapping, hitchhiking mapping, gene expression and sequence analyses of candidate genes as well as phylogenetic analyses of gene sequences. The model species will be the ninespined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius).

A successful candidate for this position will have background in population genetics/genomics and evolutionary biology. Experience and inclination on practical laboratory work with microsatellites/SNPs and/or gene sequences is essential. Applications without a demonstrated interest and/or research history in genetics will not be considered.

We are looking for an individual with a Masters Degree or equivalent, who is highly self-motivated and can work both independently and in a team. The working language will be English. The thesis work will be supervised by Dr. Takahito Shikano and Prof. Juha Merila.

The salary will be based on level 2 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities, and the job-specific component of the salary will thus be EUR 1 678 per month. 朝晩の風が冷たくなり、秋の気配を感じる季節となりましたがいかがお過ごしでしょうか？

来る12月8日（土）、SCSNは第8回フォーラム「ビザ・永住権最新情報」を開催します。
ビザ関連情報は日々刻々と変わっており、正確な情報を把握するのは大変困難です。SCSNでは移民法の専門弁護士、冨田有吾先生（http://tomitalaw.com/contact/contact_tomita_profile.htm）をお迎えして現在のビザ事情と今後の展望について、特に永住権取得方法を中心に解説をしていただきます。更に、最近永住権申請をした立川潔さん(UCSD)と佐藤誠さん（UCLA)にも体験談を話していただく予定です。

植物−ウィルス・昆虫間相互作用の研究 ポスドク募集

Seeking two postdoctoral researchers to study the molecular biology and transmission of criniviruses, and the genetic basis of plant virus-host interactions.

Position #1 (available immediately or until filled):
The major responsibility of this position is to complete the molecular characterization of a crinivirus that we have recently isolated, and to initiate studies on the molecular biology of this virus. There will also be opportunities to participate in studies aimed at identifying molecular determinants mediating insect vector transmission of viruses and the molecular basis of virus-vector interaction. Interested individuals should have a good knowledge of Virology, Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, Protein Chemistry and cloning techniques. Experience working with insects and insect vector transmission of plant viruses is not essential.

Position #2 (available in January, 2008):
The major responsibility of this position is to characterize the genetic basis for novel forms of resistance to insect transmitted virus diseases in plants. The study employs biological and molecular approaches as well as existing Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) microarray technology to identify and study plant genes that are involved in mediating disease resistance in response to viral pathogens. The discovery of previously unidentified antiviral genes could open doors to potential infection blocking strategies aimed at managing virus diseases. Background in molecular biology is required. Experience in EST expression analysis is desirable. Candidates with a background in plant viruses and plant resistance to viruses are also encouraged to apply.

A Research Technician Position in Stem Cell Biology

A research technician is available at Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital directed by Dr. Jonathan Tilly at Harvard University to study ovarian stem cell development in mouse models.

We are actively recruiting lab technicians/research assistants, who will participate exciting research focusing on isolation and characterization of stem cells and will be responsible for performing a wide variety of assays including mouse genetics and molecular techniques in a research environment of researchers and clinicians from all over the world.

Postdoctoral Position in Immunology

A postdoctoral position is available at the Knapp Center for lupus and Immunology Research at the University of Chicago to dissect mechanisms that regulate tolerance and generation of autoantibodies in mouse models of autoimmune diseases. Our research areas include B cell and T cell tolerance, memory B cell/plasma cell development and T-B cell interactions. The studies will involve molecular, cellular and genetic approaches.

A Ph.D. or M.D. degree is required. Experience with murine models, flow cytometry, and molecular techniques is prefered. The successful candidate will interact closely with the PI and scientists of the Committee on Immunology (http://biomed.uchicago.edu/common/programs/immunology/immunology.html)

We invite highly qualified individuals with a Ph.D. in biochemistry/proteomics/cell biology to join an exciting research program at the University of Chicago. One position is a joint effort between two laboratories at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory to utilize 2-D gel and radioactive elements for identification of novel metalloproteins. 当研究室では、泌尿生殖器官の発生、ステロイド・ホルモンの作用を、マウスモデルを用いて研究しています。採用された方には、マウスモデルを使った、上皮の不可逆分化／老化の研究、もしくは、マウスへの組織移植技術を用いた子宮筋腫の研究に従事していただきます。

［採用期間］: 2008年のなるべく早い時期から3年程度。給与等はNorthwestern Universityの規定に従う。
